Overview

What Real Flag / Fake Flag is

Real Flag / Fake Flag turns the traditional geography quiz into a true-or-false test. In each round you are shown a flag and asked to decide whether it is a real documented flag or a fake. A real flag is any flag that is or was actually used, which can mean a national, state, city, Indigenous, pride, organisational, military, or naval flag. A fake flag is a design that was invented for the game, such as a fan redesign, a reimagined flag, a mashup of several real flags, or something generated by software. After you choose, the correct answer appears, and the next flag is shown. The standard daily round has seven flags, and the round gets harder as it goes along. Beyond the daily mode you can choose Daily easy, a 10, 20, 50, or 100 flag challenge, Endless, or Instadeath. The game has no accounts: your streak is stored in the browser, and you can move it to another device with a generated code. You can also submit a flag for future games, and the pool includes Twemoji celebration flags as well as flags submitted by players.

Getting started

How to play

How to play Real Flag / Fake Flag: pick a mode first, since the game offers Daily, Daily easy, 10, 20, 50, and 100 flag challenges, plus Endless and Instadeath. A single flag appears, and you choose Real or Fake. The game then reveals the correct answer before moving on. A standard Daily round contains exactly seven flags, and flags become harder as the round progresses. If you play across different devices, you can generate a code to move your streak; your streak is otherwise kept only in the browser, so clearing site data loses it. There is no account system. Players can also submit a flag to be considered for future games.

Practical help

Tips

  1. Real flags include many categories: national, state, city, Indigenous, pride, organisational, military, and naval flags all count if they are or were actually used.
  2. The round gets harder as it continues, so later flags are more likely to test obscure knowledge than obvious national symbols.
  3. Proposals that were never adopted, undocumented or very obscure flags, and disputed flags are excluded from the game, so they will not be classified as real or fake.
Quick answers

Common questions

What counts as a real flag in this game?

A real flag is any documented flag that is or was actually used. This includes national, state, city, Indigenous, pride, organisational, military, and naval flags. Proposals that were never adopted, undocumented or very obscure flags, and disputed flags are excluded rather than classified.

What counts as a fake flag?

Fake flags include fan redesigns, reimagined flags, mashups of real flags, and software-generated designs. Many fake flags come from Reddit, flag forums, or the game's creator rather than from official records.

Do I need an account to keep my streak?

No. There are no accounts. Your streak is saved only in the browser, and clearing site data will lose it. You can move your streak to another device by generating a code.

What game modes are available?

You can choose Daily, Daily easy, a 10, 20, 50, or 100 flag challenge, Endless, or Instadeath. The standard daily round contains seven flags.
