Overview

What Wordspine is

Wordspine gives you a short sequence of letters and asks you to find a word that uses them in exact order. The first letter of the sequence must be the first letter of your word, the last letter must be the last, and every middle letter must appear somewhere in between, in the same order they are shown. For example, the sequence A·V·E accepts 'adventure' but not 'adventurous' because the word must end in E. Each day brings two free games: Sprint, a timed challenge of ten words that most players finish in under four minutes, and Pro, a relaxed set of four rounds with ten words each and no timer. Both games are free to play without an account, though you can optionally create one to track your progress and earn badges. New puzzles appear at midnight in your local time zone, so there is always a fresh set waiting.

Getting started

How to play

Your goal is to enter a word that satisfies the letter-sequence rule. Start with the given first letter, end with the given last letter, and make sure all middle letters appear in the word in the exact order shown. Submit your word to see if it is accepted; if it is not a valid dictionary word, the game will reject it and you can report it. In Sprint, you solve ten words one at a time against a timer, and longer words score extra points. In Pro, you work through four rounds of ten words each with no timer, and your performance ranks from Beginner to Perfect. You can play either game immediately without signing up, or create an optional account to save your results and unlock badges.

Practical help

Tips

  1. Look for words that naturally contain the sequence in order, like 'adventure' for A·V·E, rather than forcing uncommon constructions.
  2. In Sprint, longer words earn extra points, so consider valid but less obvious choices when the timer allows.
  3. Pro has no timer, so use the extra time to double-check that the last letter matches exactly and the middle letters appear in the correct order.
  4. Remember that the last letter of the sequence must be the last letter of your word, so avoid words that continue beyond that final letter.
Quick answers

Common questions

Do I need an account to play Wordspine?

No. Both Sprint and Pro are free and playable without an account. An optional account lets you track your progress and earn badges, but it is not required for any part of the game.

How many words are in each game mode?

Sprint has ten words per game. Pro has four rounds each day, with ten words per round, for a total of forty words. Both modes are refreshed with new puzzles at midnight local time.

What happens if I submit a word that is not in the dictionary?

The game rejects it. You can then report the word if you believe it should be accepted, which helps keep the word list accurate. Accepted words must be valid dictionary entries that follow the letter-sequence rule.
