Overview

What WordRank is

WordRank is a word game built around meaning. Your goal is to find a secret word chosen from a curated list of common nouns and adjectives. You search by typing any common word as a guess, and the game responds with a rank that tells you how semantically close that guess is to the answer. A rank of 1 means you have found the word itself; a rank of N means N-1 words are closer to the answer than your guess. Lower ranks are better, and color cues help you judge your position: the green band is under rank 300, while rank 800 is yellow and still considered warm. Closeness is based on meaning and usage learned from real sentences, not on letter patterns. Plurals and other word forms are treated as separate entries, so related spellings of the same stem can have very different ranks. There is no guess limit and no penalty for frequent guessing, which makes the game an open exploration of a word's meaning neighborhood rather than a limited test.

Getting started

How to play

Type a common word of your choice—such as dog, bridge, or music—and read the rank it returns. The closer the rank is to 1, the closer the guess is to the secret word in meaning. Pay attention to the green and red color cues: a green guess is under rank 300, and even rank 800 is yellow and warm. From your warmest guess, try synonyms, related concepts, and different word forms to follow the meaning thread. You can play unlimited rounds, take on a shared daily puzzle, work through an archive of past puzzles, or generate a challenge link so someone else can hunt the same secret word. Because plurals and inflected forms have separate ranks, testing alternate forms of a promising word can help you close in on rank 1.

Practical help

Tips

  1. Start with a broad, everyday word. Even a distant rank gives you a baseline and a color cue to guide your next guess.
  2. Watch the color band: guesses under rank 300 are green, and rank 800 is yellow but still warm. Use that warmth to decide whether to explore nearby meanings or cast wider.
  3. Remember that plurals and word forms are ranked separately. If a word feels close, test its other forms—the exact answer may be a different inflection.
  4. Guessing often costs nothing. There is no guess limit or penalty, so use extra guesses to probe around the warmest word and confirm the direction.
Quick answers

Common questions

Is there a limit to how many guesses I can make?

No. WordRank has no guess limit and no penalty for guessing often, so you can keep exploring the meaning space until you reach rank 1.

What kinds of words can be the secret answer?

Answer words are common nouns and adjectives. Proper nouns, slang, and technical jargon are not used. Each language also has its own independently curated answer pool rather than machine-translated words.

Can I share the same puzzle with someone else?

Yes. You can generate a challenge link that shares the exact same secret word with a friend, letting you compare how many guesses it took each of you.

Are past puzzles available?

Yes. In addition to unlimited play, there is an archive of past puzzles, and you can also take on the shared daily puzzle when you want a common challenge.
