Overview

What The Daily Hue is

The Daily Hue presents a fresh color-matching challenge every day. Each puzzle draws from a real artwork sourced from public collections or artist submissions, with the museum or collection clearly credited. Your task is to identify the exact color that anchors the featured piece. You adjust hue, saturation, and lightness to form your guess, then submit it to see how close you are to the hidden target. You have up to five guesses per puzzle to zero in on the correct shade. Once you match the color or run out of attempts, you unlock a gallery of other artworks that share the same hue, offering a broader view of how that color appears across different pieces. The game runs entirely in your browser with no download required, and each day brings a new puzzle from institutions like The Met, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art, the Rijksmuseum, or the Smithsonian. Past daily write-ups and an FAQ are available for those who want more art context behind the colors.

Getting started

How to play

Start by looking at the daily featured artwork and the color you are trying to match. Use the hue, saturation, and lightness sliders to build a candidate color. When you are satisfied with your selection, submit it as a guess. The game will compare your guess to the hidden color, giving you feedback that helps you refine your next attempt. You can make up to five guesses in total. After you either match the color or use all five guesses, the same-hue gallery unlocks, showing other artworks that share the hue you were aiming for. You can also browse past daily write-ups and the FAQ to learn more about the art and the color choices featured in earlier puzzles.

Practical help

Tips

  1. Use each of your five guesses deliberately, adjusting one slider at a time to see how the feedback changes.
  2. After finishing a puzzle, explore the unlocked same-hue gallery to see how the color appears in different artistic contexts.
  3. Check the museum or collection attribution for each artwork—it can give you a hint about the palette typical of that piece or period.
  4. Review past daily write-ups and the FAQ to understand how the color selection works and to see examples from previous days.
Quick answers

Common questions

How many guesses do I get per puzzle?

You get up to five guesses for each daily puzzle. After you either match the hidden color or exhaust all five guesses, the puzzle concludes and you unlock the same-hue gallery.

What happens after I make a guess?

Your guess is compared against the hidden color, and you receive feedback on how close you are. This helps you adjust your sliders for the next attempt. Once you match or use all guesses, you can view a gallery of other artworks that share the same hue.

Are the featured artworks real?

Yes. Every daily puzzle features a real artwork from public collections or artist submissions. The museum or collection is always attributed, so you know the source of the piece.
