Overview

What The Chronology Game is

The Chronology Game puts a spatial twist on general-knowledge trivia. Instead of choosing from multiple answers, you receive an event card with no date and must decide where it sits on a growing timeline. Each correct placement adds the event to the timeline and keeps the game moving; each mistake costs one of three lives. The game judges relative order rather than exact years, so an event only needs to fit between the neighbours around it. The database includes over 2,000 historical events spanning world history, science, inventions, culture, sports, and pop culture, with disputed or multi-year events tied to their most commonly cited year. Play continues with a fresh sequence of cards after starting a new game, and the browser-based experience works as a PWA with partial offline functionality after being added to the home screen.

Getting started

How to play

Drag a historical event card onto the timeline at the position you believe is chronologically correct. Look at the events already placed and decide whether the new event belongs before or after each of them. If the placement is right, the event joins the timeline and play continues. If it is wrong, you lose a life. Keep placing events until all three lives are gone, then start a new game to receive a fresh sequence of cards. You do not need to know the exact year; the game checks relative order, so an event only has to sit between the correct neighbours. No account is required, and the high score is saved in the browser.

Practical help

Tips

  1. When placing an event, focus on the nearest events already on the timeline; an event must fit between its neighbours rather than match a precise year.
  2. For events with disputed or multi-year dating, use the most commonly cited year, since that is what the game uses to judge placement.
  3. A wrong placement does not end the game immediately; you still have remaining lives, and the timeline continues to guide your next decision.
Quick answers

Common questions

Do I need to create an account to play?

No. The Chronology Game requires no account and is completely free, with no ads, premium tier, or option to buy more lives. Your high score is saved in the browser rather than on a server.

Can I play offline?

The game is available as a PWA, so after adding it to your home screen you get partial offline functionality. This makes it convenient to play when you have an unreliable internet connection.

Does the game require exact dates?

No. The game checks relative order, not exact year. An event just needs to fit between the events already placed around it. For disputed or multi-year events, the game uses the most commonly cited year.
