What Scout is
Scout is a daily NHL mystery-player puzzle. Each morning one current regular NHL player becomes the target, and every player who opens the board sees the same name. Your job is to figure out who it is before your eight guesses run out. After every correct roster-name submission, the game returns a scouting report with eight clue cells: team, division, position, age, number, height, born, and hand. Green cells match the target, yellow cells are close, and plain cells miss. Arrows next to age, number, and height tell you whether the target is older, higher, or taller. A file panel tracks which clues are pinned down, narrowed to a range, or still open, helping you turn scattered observations into a confident pick before the board closes.
How to play
Enter a listed NHL player's name and submit the guess to receive eight clue cells. Review each cell: green means exact match, yellow means close, and plain means miss. For age, number, and height, follow the up/down arrows to learn if today's player is older, higher, or taller than your guess. Use the file summary to track what is confirmed and what remains uncertain. Make another guess using the narrowed information. You have up to eight guesses per daily board. When you identify the player, the board is solved; if your eight guesses run out, the board is over. A new player appears at 6 AM ET, closing any board from the night before. Past players are available in the archive for replay without changing your record, streak, or share.
Tips
- Use the age, number, and height arrows to move in the right direction; yellow means you are within two years, two numbers, or one inch, so treat those as valuable near misses.
- Check the file panel after each guess to see which category is pinned down, reduced to a range, or still open, and focus your next guess on the widest remaining category.
- Only listed players can be guessed, so choose from the roster list rather than free-typing a misspelled name; a typo never costs a guess.
- Replay archived players as practice to sharpen your reading of the eight clue cells; practice boards do not touch your record, streak, or share.
Common questions
What do the clue colors mean?
Green means the clue matches today's player. Yellow means it is close: age within 2 years, number within 2, height within 1 inch, same division or conference, or both forwards. Plain means it is a miss. Close clues still help because they limit the target's range or category.
How many guesses do I get?
You get up to eight guesses per daily board. The same player is used for everyone that morning, and at 6 AM ET a new player arrives, closing any board started the night before.
What is a freeze?
If you play seven days in a row, you bank one freeze, and you can hold up to two. A freeze covers a missed day; it does not save a board after you have lost it.
Can I practice on old boards?
Yes, past players have archive pages that include the eight clues that found them. You can replay those days as practice without affecting your record, streak, or share.
