Overview

What Redacted is

Redacted drops you into the role of a puzzle solver examining a police case file from the fictional town of Caldmere, Massachusetts. Each file has five words blacked out, and your job is to deduce what they are from the surrounding text. The case files are presented in a redacted format, giving the puzzle a distinct investigative feel. A new case is released every day, and you can also access a case archive to work through past puzzles. Leaderboards and stats let you track your solving history. This daily word challenge is part of the Penumbra universe, adding a layer of narrative context to the otherwise standalone puzzles.

Getting started

How to play

Start by reading the police file carefully. The file will contain a narrative with five redacted sections, each representing a missing word. Use the context of the sentences and the overall case details to infer what each word should be. Enter your guess for each redacted word, then submit the completed file to see if your deductions match the intended solution. After solving, you can explore the case archive to attempt older cases or review your stats and leaderboard position.

Practical help

Tips

  1. Read the entire file before guessing any single word, as later context can clarify earlier redactions.
  2. Pay attention to the tone and details of the Caldmere setting, which may hint at local terminology or names.
  3. Use the case archive to practice on previous puzzles and sharpen your deduction skills without waiting for the next daily release.
