Overview

What It Took is

It Took turns hands-on science into a daily number puzzle. Every day brings five experiment scenarios, and each one starts with a short statement plus the assumptions you need to understand the challenge. Your task is to supply the exact number of objects or actions required to make the experiment work. A slider lets you choose a numeric guess anywhere on a scale that spans from zero up to 1 million, then the experiment runs as an animated simulation using your amount. The outcome is clearly labeled: not enough, too many, or just right. You get three tries per experiment, and earlier accuracy earns more points: 3 points for a first-try hit, 2 for a second-try hit, and 1 for a third-try hit. A perfect day across all five experiments adds up to 15 points. Fanciful examples like balloons lifting a cat or batteries boiling a kettle keep the scenarios playful, while past days stay archived and playable whenever you want more practice. No account or email is required to play.

Getting started

How to play

Start by selecting one of the five experiments available for the day. Read its statement carefully, including the assumptions, so you know exactly what quantity is being tested. Use the slider to set a numeric guess within the available range, then let the simulation run to see how your amount performs. The result will say whether the number was not enough, too many, or just right. If it was not a hit, adjust the slider based on that feedback and try again; each experiment allows up to three attempts. After finishing, you can share your results and challenge a friend to the same set of daily experiments.

Practical help

Tips

  1. Read the scenario's assumptions before guessing; the scope of the experiment can dramatically narrow the believable range.
  2. When unsure, choose a middle value first so the not-enough or too-many feedback helps you bracket the correct answer.
  3. Treat each failed attempt as data: a result of not enough or too many tells you which side of the true number to move toward.
  4. Aim for a first-try hit whenever possible, because 3 points per experiment is the only path to the perfect 15-point daily score.
Quick answers

Common questions

How many points can I earn in a day?

Each day offers five experiments, and every experiment gives you three tries. First-try success earns 3 points, second-try success earns 2, and third-try success earns 1, so the maximum daily score is 15 points.

Can I replay or play older experiments?

Yes, past days are archived and remain playable. They do not count toward the current daily streak, but they are available for extra practice or just for fun.

Do I need an account or email to play?

No, you can play directly in your web browser without creating an account or providing an email. There is also an anonymous feedback option if you want to send comments to the developer.

What happens if my guess is wrong?

The simulation will show whether your number was not enough, too many, or just right. You can use that result to choose a new number and try again, up to a total of three attempts per experiment.
